A 52-year-old man, Ademilua Oni, has been remanded in custody by an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court following allegations that he killed his 92-year-old mother, Mrs. Comfort Oni.
The court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Kehinde Awosika, ordered the remand of the defendant at the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The case is set to be mentioned again on January 30, 2025.
Prosecutor Inspector Elijah Adejare informed the court that the incident occurred on December 15 at Iropora-Ekiti, located in the Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State.
According to Adejare, the defendant allegedly pushed his mother during an argument after she confronted him for stealing. The push reportedly caused her to fall, leading to her death.
The offence, as stated by the prosecutor, contravenes Section 234 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
While the court declined to take Oni's plea, the prosecutor emphasized the need for his remand until the DPP’s office provides legal counsel on the matter.
This tragic case has sparked discussions about family disputes and the consequences of escalating domestic conflicts.
