The Federal Government has completed documentation to facilitate the extradition of Simon Ekpa, a prominent Biafra agitator, from Finland to Nigeria. Ekpa faces terrorism-related charges, including incitement to violence and financing separatist activities.
General Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, confirmed the progress during an interview on *Channels Television*, expressing optimism about Finland’s cooperation in the matter.
“Well, I’m sure he’s cooling off somewhere. Legal action will be taken accordingly. I don’t want to say too much, but I’m glad he’s been arrested,” Musa remarked.
Ekpa was apprehended in November 2024 by Finnish authorities along with four associates. A court in Lahti, Finland, ordered his remand after finding probable grounds for public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent in Nigeria.
The activist gained notoriety for his social media campaigns advocating the violent secession of Nigeria’s southeastern region, actions that have drawn widespread criticism and raised concerns about national security.
This extradition effort underscores Nigeria’s resolve to address threats to its unity and stability. The Finnish government is expected to expedite its review of the submitted documents, paving the way for Ekpa’s trial in Nigeria.
The move is a significant step in Nigeria’s strategy to curtail separatist movements and reinforce its legal framework against terrorism.
