Concerns are mounting over the status of Ayomide Adeleye, the young man who confessed to killing Christianah Idowu, his friend and neighbor, after it was confirmed that he is not currently held in any correctional facility in Lagos State.
Adeleye was initially arrested in September for the murder of Idowu, a 300-level student at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). Rumors of his release began circulating in December, prompting friends and family to express concerns about the progress of the case.
Efforts by *FIJ* to verify these claims led to reports from sources within the police force who confirmed hearing similar rumors but noted that information from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) remained scarce. "The police handed him over to the Ikoyi Prison, but the judiciary is slow in its dealings. The warrant doesn’t expire, so I wonder how he secured release for a murder offence," one insider remarked.
Further inquiries by *FIJ* into NCoS records revealed that two individuals named Ayomide Adeleye were held in custody, but neither faced charges of murder. Both individuals have since been released. A credible source within NCoS stated, "We had one in Ikoyi and one in Kirikiri Medium, but they are no longer with us here. They have been released. None of them was charged with murder or kidnapping."
When *FIJ* sought clarification, the source stated, "There is no Ayomide Adeleye in any prison in Lagos. Maybe you should ask the police because they are the ones who obtained the remand warrant."
Despite multiple attempts to reach Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos State Police spokesman, for clarification, there was no response. However, Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi assured *FIJ* that he would investigate the matter and provide a response.
Adeleye, a 200-Level Philosophy student at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ogun State, admitted to killing Idowu in early September. The murder occurred after an altercation between the two, and Adeleye was later charged. In November, he was remanded in Ikoyi Prison by a magistrate, pending advice from the DPP. Although *FIJ* contacted the DPP for updates, the directorate has not yet responded.
The case continues to raise questions about the handling of serious criminal cases in the state, as both the police and prison authorities remain tight-lipped over Adeleye’s current whereabouts and legal status.
