The community of Obantoko in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was left in disbelief and fear following the gruesome killing of 39-year-old barber, Toheeb Folarin, on Tuesday.
According to information gathered from the state police command on Thursday, the incident occurred at approximately 10 pm on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old victim was fatally shot in his barbershop when suspected cultists raided the premises.
Omolola Odutola, the command’s spokesperson, says that the victim was discovered inside his workshop with a gunshot wound to the left chest and his left wrist severed, lying in a pool of blood.
She explained that the heinous nature of the act heightened tensions in the region, necessitating the presence of security forces to restore order.
The command’s spokesperson also mentioned that the situation had returned to normal and that investigations into the murder were in progress.
Odutola said, “The tragic incident occurred on January 7, 2025, at approximately 10:10 PM. The police station received information about the crime through members of the public, specifically from Jimoh Afolabi, a community leader, and Omotosho Basiru, a relative of the deceased.
“Upon receiving the report, a team of detectives led by Divisional Police Officer CSP Akindipe Michael, alongside a joint patrol team from the Adatan Area Command and the Anti-Cultism Unit, swiftly visited the crime scene.”
She highlighted that the police’s attempt to transfer the body to the mortuary was thwarted by a group of around 300 angry youths, who insisted on burying the victim according to Islamic customs on the second day.
She also mentioned that the victim’s family had submitted a letter withdrawing from further police investigations, stating their intention to support their stance with an affidavit.
Odutola expressed the command’s commitment to capturing those responsible for the heinous crime, urging residents to share any information that could assist in bringing the suspects to justice.
