Tragedy struck the Rumaya community in Kwassam ward, Kauru Local Government Area, Kaduna State, as bandits killed a 27-year-old man, Piti Ezekiel, and abducted five others during a late-night raid.
The attack, which occurred on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at approximately 10:30 p.m., saw the assailants open fire indiscriminately, leaving one man dead and several injured. Among the injured was 48-year-old Timothy Daure, a traditional titleholder in Kumana Chiefdom, who survived with gunshot wounds.
The victims of the abduction have been identified as Afiniki Baban Gida (46), Afiniki Timothy (41), Talatu Timothy (40), Manayi Abu (36), and Richard Dalhatu (42).
Speaking to *The Punch* in a telephone interview on Friday, January 24, Danbaba Katuka, the National Secretary of Kauru Local Government Area CDAs Forum, described the attack as a nightmare for the community.
“This is the first time our community has been attacked, and it has left our people in fear. The government must act quickly before these terrorists overrun Kauru entirely,” Katuka said.
Katuka criticized the government's response to the rising insecurity, noting that multiple communities in the area have suffered attacks with little intervention. “It has been one attack after another across different communities, yet not much has been done to curb the activities of these criminals.”
He called for robust military action to dismantle the bandits' camps and restore security to the region.
The attack has left the community reeling, with many residents fleeing their homes and farms for fear of further violence or abductions. Katuka emphasized the readiness of the locals to collaborate with security forces in addressing the challenges.
“Communities are prepared to provide all necessary support to resolve the security crisis in Kauru,” he added.
This latest assault highlights the persistent insecurity in parts of Kaduna State, raising concerns about the safety of rural communities and the need for decisive government action.
