Security operatives in Edo State have arrested three suspected kidnappers linked to a series of abductions in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area.
The suspects, identified as Asene Ogah (49), Ibhafidon Eric (29), and Ekpu Godfrey (44), were apprehended on Tuesday by the Edo State Security Corps following a distress call from a woman who narrowly escaped an attempted abduction.
Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, Friday Ibadin, disclosed to journalists in Benin City on Friday that his team responded swiftly to the call, locating and rescuing the victim, who had hidden in the bush.
"We placed the woman in a secure location before moving in on the suspects. Our operatives managed to arrest three out of the seven men who stormed her residence to abduct her," Ibadin stated.
During the operation, security personnel recovered two locally made pump-action guns from the suspects.
Ibadin further revealed that the arrested individuals confessed to their involvement in kidnapping activities in the area. However, he dismissed their claim of working with the police, stating that no law enforcement unit in Uromi had confirmed such an association.
"The suspects will be handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution," he added.
Residents of Uromi, who have been on edge due to rising cases of abductions, have praised the swift intervention by the security corps and called for intensified efforts to rid the area of criminal elements.
