
Several operatives of the Anambra State Special Anti-Tout Squad are feared dead, while others sustained injuries after their vehicle collided with a sand-loaded tipper on Friday along the Onitsha-Owerri Road in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.
The fatal crash occurred during the operatives’ routine stop-and-search operation when their Toyota Hiace bus reportedly rammed into the tipper while emerging from a junction.
Eyewitness Chinwe Okeke recounted the harrowing scene, stating that eight operatives were inside the branded vehicle, which was moving at high speed before the collision.
“After the accident, the occupants were trapped. Passers-by helped in pulling out bodies, and more than four lifeless bodies were seen on the road, while others with injuries were rushed to the hospital,” she said.
The incident led to a traffic gridlock, causing panic among road users. A viral video circulating on social media captures the aftermath, showing bodies sprawled across the road as bystanders attempted to rescue survivors.
Anambra Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the accident, stating that further details would be provided after an official report. Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) spokesperson, Margaret Onabe, noted that efforts were ongoing to verify the situation.
The tragic accident has sparked concerns over road safety and the operational conduct of enforcement agencies on Anambra roads.
