The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested eight former local government chairmen from Ondo State, accusing them of embezzling billions of naira during their time in office.
The arrests were made after the EFCC received petitions from concerned local government workers, alleging fraudulent transactions involving the chairmen. These individuals are currently being questioned by the EFCC at its Benin zonal office over activities dating back to 2017.
Sources reveal that the alleged financial mismanagement occurred during the transition between former Governor Olusegun Mimiko and the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. It is believed the chairmen misused council funds through fake accounts and contracts, bypassing the interests of local government workers.
An insider noted that documents related to the alleged fraudulent activities are still available for investigation, and that the arrested chairmen are expected to cooperate with the EFCC to provide necessary answers.
The investigation spans all 18 local governments in Ondo State, with treasurers and local government administration heads also being questioned in connection to the alleged financial misconduct.
The arrests come shortly after the state held local government elections, where the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) secured victory in all chairmanship positions.
Sources indicate that government intervention efforts, including input from labor leaders, are underway. As part of ongoing investigations, further arrests may be expected, with more individuals being summoned to the EFCC office for questioning.
Both the state government’s spokesperson, Ebenezer Adeniyan, and EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, were unavailable for comment at the time of this report.
