A Nigerian man has shared a shocking story of how he was arrested and sentenced to one year in prison over a pair of slippers.

In a viral video circulating on X (formerly Twitter), the man narrated his ordeal, explaining how an innocent night out turned into a nightmare.

According to him, the incident happened on January 6, 2024. After closing from work, a friend invited him to a birthday party.

On their way back, his fuel ran out, so he and his friend went to a nearby house where a woman sold fuel.

The woman came out and sold the fuel to them, but unbeknownst to him, his friend’s slippers had just torn.

Instead of informing him, the friend took a pair of slippers belonging to the woman’s son, which was left outside, and started walking away with it.

The woman quickly noticed and accused them of theft, calling out for help. Her husband then phoned the police, who arrived and arrested them.

They spent three days in police custody, thinking it was a minor issue, but eventually, they were sentenced to prison.

Recounting his experience in the video, he said:

“I drive Keke. On January 6, 2024, I closed from work, and a friend invited me to a birthday party. So, I carried him there.”

“On our way back, my fuel finished, so I asked my friend to follow me to buy some from a woman in the area.”

“After buying the fuel, my friend’s slippers got damaged, but he didn’t tell me. He just took the slippers at the front of the house, which belonged to the woman’s son.”

“As we were leaving, the woman called us back and realized what happened. I apologized, but she refused to listen and started calling us thieves.”

“I stayed back, begging and explaining that it wasn’t intentional while cautioning my friend. But before I knew it, her husband called the police, and we were arrested.”

“We spent three days at the station, thinking it was a small matter, only to end up in prison.”

The video, which contains more details of his experience, has since sparked reactions on social media.
