A vigilant neighborhood watch group in Aba has foiled an attempt to vandalize a major power installation, leading to the arrest of a 20-year-old suspect, Uchenna Iroha.
Iroha, a resident of Ohuhu in Umuahia, was apprehended while allegedly attempting to steal components from a 500kVA distribution transformer located along Ngwa Road, near the Old Court.
Confirming the arrest, Mr. Ken Agu, Chief Security Officer of Geometric Power, stated that the suspect had been under surveillance for suspected involvement in previous acts of vandalism.
“The security team has been closely monitoring him. We trust that the officers at the Ndiegoro Divisional Police Headquarters will conduct a thorough investigation,” Agu said in a statement released on Friday by Aba Power’s Brand and Communications Manager, Edise Ekong.
Authorities are now working to determine whether Iroha acted alone or was part of a larger network of vandals targeting electrical infrastructure.
The Aba Power management also praised the local community for stepping up efforts to safeguard the transformer, especially after two recent cases of vandalism that plunged the area into darkness.
“These criminal acts disrupt lives and businesses, forcing costly repairs,” Agu lamented. “It is unacceptable that a handful of vandals steal copper wires and other components to sell as scrap, leaving entire neighborhoods without electricity.”
He commended residents for their growing commitment to protecting power installations, noting that improved electricity supply in Aba has strengthened public trust in the energy provider.
As incidents of power infrastructure vandalism persist, security agencies and community groups continue to collaborate in safeguarding essential services across Abia State.
