The Federal Government has uncovered and deleted 6,000 illegally obtained National Identity Numbers (NINs) from its database, all of which were fraudulently acquired by individuals from the Niger Republic.
According to a high-ranking source within the presidency, the revelation was made by Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. The minister assured the council that the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) had taken corrective action to remove the compromised records.
“The interior minister stated that NIMC is currently refining its database and discovered that over 6,000 individuals from the Niger Republic had managed to obtain NINs. However, those records have now been erased,” the source confirmed.
Tunji-Ojo has also been assigned to a special panel overseeing the country’s humanitarian sector, which manages conditional cash transfers and other welfare programs, ensuring that fraudulent identities do not compromise government initiatives.
Confirming the development, NIMC’s Director-General, Bisoye Coker-Odusote, reiterated the agency’s commitment to maintaining data integrity, particularly in financial disbursements for humanitarian projects.
The issue of fake and illegally acquired NINs has been a persistent challenge. In a similar case on October 13, 2022, the Defence Headquarters reported that security forces, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police and Immigration Service, intercepted two individuals posing as NIMC officials. Investigations revealed they had traveled to the Gagamari IDP camp in the Niger Republic to register non-Nigerians.
This latest development has reignited concerns about identity fraud and unauthorized access to Nigeria’s national database, as reports continue to emerge of fraudulent agents allegedly charging foreigners—especially from neighboring countries like Niger—to obtain Nigerian NINs.
Authorities have vowed to intensify monitoring efforts to prevent further breaches and safeguard the national identity system.
