The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of nine individuals linked to the gruesome killing of Hon. Justice Azuka, a lawmaker representing Onitsha North Constituency 1 in the Anambra State House of Assembly.
Azuka, who was kidnapped on December 24, 2024, was found dead on Thursday, February 6, 2025, beneath the 2nd Niger Bridge. His decomposing remains were recovered by a joint security team comprising the police and the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG).
Addressing journalists in Awka, Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Obono Itam revealed that two pump-action rifles were seized from the suspects, and one of them sustained a gunshot wound during an exchange of fire with security operatives.
The arrested suspects include Ugochukwu Onuorah (30), Ikemefuna Ossai (20), Ikenna Orugu (27), Chibuike Obiefuna (19), and Chinonso Olisa (19). Others identified are Chinedu Okoli (21), David Ojini (25), and Peter Sunday (20), whom police described as the most notorious. Authorities noted that Sunday had a bold tattoo on his chest that read, quote]No Peace 4 the Government.[/quote]
In a separate operation, security forces also apprehended a suspected kidnapper, Chidiebere Nwosu, in Nnewi. His gang, notorious for attacks on law enforcement officers, was neutralized during a confrontation.
CP Itam further disclosed that ongoing security operations in Anambra State have led to the elimination of over 100 criminals and the dismantling of several hideouts used by armed gangs.
The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in the fight against violent crime in Anambra, with authorities vowing to bring all perpetrators of Azuka’s murder to justice.
