Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly representing Onitsha North Constituency, has been abducted by unknown assailants. The incident occurred on Tuesday night along Ugwunapampa Road in Inland Town, Onitsha, the state’s commercial hub.
Azuka, a Labour Party chieftain who regained his seat after the court overturned the 2023 election victory of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Douglas Egbuna, was reportedly taken to an undisclosed location.
A close associate of the lawmaker revealed that his whereabouts remain unknown, and no contact has been made by the abductors. The situation has sparked widespread concern among residents, who are calling for improved security measures.
Confirming the abduction, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, assured the public that efforts are underway to rescue Azuka and apprehend those responsible.
“The Anambra Police Command has activated operational plans for the possible rescue and arrest of the kidnappers of Mr. Justice Azuka,” Ikenga stated. “Preliminary reports indicate that on December 24, 2024, at about 9:20 pm, while he was returning home, he was abducted by unidentified persons. The Command is working on actionable clues, and further updates will be provided.”
The abduction has drawn parallels to a similar incident in 2022, where Okechukwu Okoye, the lawmaker representing Aguata Constituency 1, was kidnapped and later found beheaded. Okoye, who hailed from the same community as Governor Chukwuma Soludo, met a tragic end that shocked the state.
Residents and political leaders are urging swift action to prevent a repeat of such tragic outcomes, as fears over rising insecurity in the state grow.
