The Niger State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old woman, Joy Nuwa, along with three accomplices for allegedly conspiring to abduct her cousin’s six-month-old baby and attempting to sell the child in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed in a statement that the infant has been rescued unharmed and reunited with her mother.
According to police reports, the incident began when the baby’s mother entrusted Nuwa with the child’s care while she ran an errand. However, instead of safeguarding the baby, Nuwa, in collaboration with some neighbors, took the child to Kubwa, Abuja, with the intent to sell her to an unidentified buyer.
On January 25, 2025, at approximately 9:00 a.m., officers from the Maje Division apprehended four suspects: Joy Nuwa (20) of Nasarawa, Favour James (25) of Kwamba, Ezekiel Emmanuel (30) of Kwamba, and Patience Obana (23) of Kubwa, Abuja.
The baby’s disappearance was reported the previous night at around 10:00 p.m. by her distressed mother, who had returned home to find both her child and cousin missing. When confronted, Nuwa initially claimed she had locked the baby inside the house before leaving. However, further investigation revealed no signs of forced entry, leading officers to interrogate her neighbors.
Under police questioning, Ezekiel Emmanuel confessed to being part of the conspiracy, revealing that they had transported the child to Patience Obana in Abuja for the purpose of selling her. Acting on this lead, officers swiftly arrested the remaining suspects and successfully rescued the baby.
All four suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna, where further investigations are underway. The police assured the public that the suspects will face prosecution for their roles in the crime.
