Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have foiled an attempt to smuggle heroin into Nigeria through Port Harcourt International Airport, leading to the arrest of a major drug trafficker.
According to NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the suspect, identified as Onyekwonike Elochuckwu Sylvanus, 30, was apprehended on Sunday, February 2, 2025, upon arrival at the airport on a Qatar Airways flight from Doha via Abuja. Sylvanus, who was traveling under the alias Kargbo Mohamed Foday with a Sierra Leonean passport, was found to be in possession of illicit drugs.
A body scan conducted by NDLEA operatives confirmed that he had ingested narcotics. Under excretion monitoring, he later expelled 62 wraps of heroin, weighing approximately 1.348 kilograms, over five separate excretions.
Further investigations revealed that Sylvanus is a seasoned trafficker who frequently switches between his Nigerian and Sierra Leonean identities to smuggle drugs across Thailand, Pakistan, Iran, and West Africa. He reportedly admitted to becoming fully involved in drug trafficking in 2017 after the collapse of his clothing and shoe business.
The NDLEA has reiterated its commitment to combating drug smuggling and ensuring that offenders face the full force of the law.
