President Bola Tinubu led tributes to the late banking tycoon Herbert Wigwe, describing him as “a shining star” whose light will never be dimmed.
Tinubu’s eulogy came during a one-year remembrance service held in Lagos, where Wigwe was remembered for his contributions to Nigeria’s financial landscape.
“Wigwe was more than a banker. He was a builder – of institutions, of dreams and people,” Tinubu said, highlighting Wigwe’s role in empowering youth, promoting education, healthcare, and philanthropy.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also paid tribute, noting that Wigwe’s death has “left an indelible void in our hearts and our nation’s financial landscape.”
Obasanjo praised Wigwe’s legacy, saying it endures despite his passing.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remembered Wigwe as “larger than life,” saying his presence is still deeply felt in the state. Sanwo-Olu highlighted Wigwe’s support for the State’s projects, saying his absence has been strongly felt.
French President Emmanuel Macron also honored Wigwe, describing him as “an exceptional entrepreneur, a friend of the arts, a man who served his country and the public interest; a friend of France.”
Macron’s representative, Laurent Favier, noted Wigwe’s role in strengthening Nigeria-France ties during his time as President of the France-Nigeria Business Council.
The remembrance service was attended by family members, corporate friends, partners, and high-profile personalities, all of whom came to pay their respects to a man whose legacy continues to inspire and motivate.
As Tinubu said, “Nigeria has lost a shining star, but the light Wigwe lighted in our nation will never be dimmed.”
