Kenyan long-distance runner Edwin Kibet Koech has emerged victorious in the 2025 Lagos City Marathon, finishing the 42km race in an impressive time of 2 hours and 14 minutes. His triumph earned him the event’s grand prize of $50,000.
This marks Koech’s second win in the prestigious competition, having previously claimed the top spot in the 2023 edition.
The marathon, which celebrated its 10th edition since its inception in 2016, attracted approximately 37,000 participants who competed in both the 42km full marathon and the 10km race. According to race General Manager and former Nigerian long jumper Yusuf Ali, the figure was based on the number of race kits distributed out of over 60,000 registered runners.
“The figure was derived from the number of running kits distributed out of the over 60,000 runners who registered to take part,” Ali said during the event.
The full marathon commenced at 6:30 a.m. from the National Stadium in Surulere, while the 10km race began later at 9:30 a.m. from Grace Garden Event Centre in Lekki. Both races concluded at Eko Atlantic City.
Now recognized as a World Athletics gold-label event, the Lagos City Marathon is aiming for a platinum label, which would make it the first marathon in Africa to achieve that status.
To facilitate the race, the Lagos State Government had earlier announced an eight-hour road closure and traffic diversion from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, ensuring smooth logistics for the large-scale event.
