A motorist in Abuja has accused officers of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command of assaulting him and extorting ₦350,000 at gunpoint while enforcing third-party insurance compliance.
According to reports by SaharaReporters, the incident occurred along Arab Road, where the motorist was stopped by officers from the Kubwa Phase 4 Police Station. Despite presenting valid vehicle documents, he was allegedly taken to the station without a proper inspection of his papers.
Recounting his ordeal, the victim, whose name has been withheld, stated that he was treated like a criminal and pressured to make an immediate payment.
*"On Friday evening, policemen from Kubwa Police stopped me on Arab Road, claiming they were checking for third-party insurance. They didn’t even look at my vehicle documents before insisting that I follow them to the station,"* he said.
At the station, the officers allegedly demanded ₦1.5 million but later reduced their demand to ₦650,000. Unable to resist, the motorist said he was forced to transfer ₦350,000 through a POS operator within the station, identified as Joshua Ayokunle Agboola, with the remaining balance expected on Monday.
*"They called a POS operator outside the station and collected ₦350,000, instructing me to provide the rest later,"* he added.
The incident has sparked concerns over alleged police misconduct within the FCT, particularly at the Kubwa Area Command. Authorities are yet to respond to the allegations.
