Tragedy struck as Oluwafemi Ayo-Owolawi, a 31-year-old graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, passed away following a long battle with renal cancer.
His death was announced on Saturday by Lagos-based public analyst Yinka Ogunnubi via a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he expressed deep sorrow over the loss.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the unfortunate passing of Oluwafemi Ayomide Ayo-Owolawi. Femi has gone to be with the Lord and will be buried today. His family wishes to express their profound thanks and gratitude to all those who contributed towards his cancer treatment. You all gave Femi a fighting chance,” Ogunnubi wrote.
He further described Femi as a fighter, stating, “Femi fought, he did. Even in death, he was smiling. We thank God for his life and the impact he made while he was still with us. May God console his family, may God strengthen his mum, and may Femi’s soul find eternal rest. RIP Champion!”
In 2024, a fundraising campaign was launched by Ogunnubi and Ayomide Adebanjo via GoFundMe in an effort to cover Femi’s medical expenses. The campaign sought to raise N12 million, but only N9.5 million was gathered, with N9.4 million spent on his surgery and chemotherapy.
Following his initial operation in May, doctors recommended 12 cycles of chemotherapy. However, despite undergoing treatment, Femi eventually succumbed to the illness.
His death has left family, friends, and well-wishers devastated, with many taking to social media to pay tribute to his resilience and courage.
