A potential disaster was averted in Kaduna on Sunday after operatives of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Northwest Zonal Office, swiftly intervened in a fuel tanker accident at Romi New Extension, near Command Junction.
The tanker, fully loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), had overturned, causing a major fuel spill and posing a serious risk to lives and property. Upon receiving the distress report at approximately 11:46 AM, NEMA immediately activated an emergency response, deploying a multi-agency team to contain the situation.
In a statement posted on its X handle, NEMA detailed the coordinated efforts that prevented the situation from escalating. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kaduna State Traffic and Environmental Law Enforcement Agency (KASTLEA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Joint Task Force (JTF) managed traffic and ensured public safety. Meanwhile, firefighters from the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) and NEMA conducted cooling operations to prevent an explosion during the delicate transfer of fuel.
Additionally, medical and humanitarian support was provided by the Nigerian Red Cross Society and the National Blood Transfusion Service, while the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and media outlets played a crucial role in keeping the public informed.
By 4:57 PM, emergency teams had successfully transferred the fuel to another tanker without any casualties. NEMA praised the professionalism and swift action of all agencies involved, emphasizing the importance of inter-agency collaboration in preventing disasters.
The successful operation underscores the need for continued vigilance and emergency preparedness in handling tanker accidents, ensuring public safety across the country.
