The family of Olashile Oduga, a car dealer based in Ikorodu, Lagos, is calling for justice following allegations that he was tortured to death by officers at the Ikota Police Post.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Oduga’s elder sister, Abisola Bakare, recounted how they discovered his tragic fate. She revealed that his pregnant wife had called her on Wednesday, distressed that his phone had been unreachable since Tuesday afternoon.

*“I contacted the estate manager where he lived in Chevron, Ajah, to check on him. That was when we learned that police officers from the Ikota Police Post had arrested him on Tuesday,”* Bakare explained.

Investigations revealed that Oduga had a dispute with a neighbor, Stasia Nora, which escalated into a physical altercation. The woman later reported the matter to the police, leading to his arrest.

Denial and Shocking Discovery
Bakare recounted how she and her sisters went to the Ikota Police Post on Wednesday, only to be told there was no record of Oduga in custody. The estate manager, who had witnessed the arrest, challenged the officers, prompting them to direct the family to Ajah Police Station, where they claimed the case had been transferred.

Upon arriving at the station, Bakare was met with unexpected sympathy from officers, who repeatedly told her to "take it easy."

*“I demanded my brother’s release, but to my shock, the Investigating Police Officer, Modinat Alaka, broke down in tears,”* she said.

It was then that the Divisional Police Officer pressured Alaka to speak, and she finally revealed that Oduga was dead.

According to Alaka, Oduga appeared weak upon arrival at the station and was taken to Epe General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. However, the officers admitted they had no video or photographic evidence of him being taken to the hospital.

Suspicious Circumstances and Escalation
Doubting the police account, Bakare reported the case to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) at Alagbon later that night. By Thursday morning, she was summoned back to Ajah Police Station, where officers continued pleading for leniency.

Soon after, operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti intervened, ordering the immediate transfer of the case. The woman involved in the altercation with Oduga and two policemen responsible for his arrest were taken into custody.

At SCID Panti, Chief Superintendent of Police Abdullahi Lateef interrogated the officers, who claimed Oduga was detained for allegedly injuring the woman’s hand during their fight. However, under further questioning, they admitted there were no significant injuries aside from a broken fingernail.

Lateef, unconvinced, ordered their detention and directed the family to inspect Oduga’s body at the mortuary.

Evidence of Brutal Torture
On Friday, Bakare and her family arrived at the mortuary, where they were confronted with gruesome evidence of abuse.

*“His body was covered in bloodstains with multiple signs of physical assault. Deep handcuff marks were visible on his wrists, showing he had been severely restrained,”* she recalled.

After viewing the evidence, CSP Lateef acknowledged that Oduga had likely been tortured to death, offering an apology to the family.

Family Vows to Pursue Justice
Determined to seek justice, the family has vowed to take legal action.

*“We will not let this go. We are getting a lawyer and will ensure that justice is served,”* Bakare stated.

Meanwhile, her husband, Ayoola, took to social media to alert Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, about the case. However, as of the time of filing this report, Hundeyin had not responded to inquiries.

The family plans to retrieve Oduga’s body from the mortuary on Monday for burial while legal proceedings begin.
