
Tension erupted in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, as enraged youths set a police division on fire following the alleged death of a young man in police custody.
According to reports, the deceased was allegedly tortured by officers while in detention, leading to his death. The incident, which occurred on Saturday evening, has sparked widespread outrage in the community.
Residents disclosed that the crisis originated from a confrontation on Valentine’s Day. Upon learning of the young man's death, protesters mobilized and stormed the police station in large numbers. Eyewitnesses said the officers on duty were overpowered as the irate crowd set the building ablaze.
Confirming the development, the state police spokesperson, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, stated that additional security personnel had been deployed to the town to prevent further unrest.
She also revealed that the Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, was already on his way to Ifon to restore order and ensure that the situation did not escalate. Authorities have yet to release a full account of the circumstances surrounding the young man's death, but investigations are reportedly underway.
