A murder investigation has been launched after a Nigerian man, Quam Babatunde, 34, was fatally stabbed in the early hours of Saturday, February 15, 2025, in Dublin, Ireland.
The incident occurred at approximately 3 a.m. on South Anne Street in Dublin city centre during what authorities described as a large-scale public disturbance involving two groups.
Confirming the victim’s nationality, Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan condemned the violence, stating that such acts are "not acceptable on the streets of Dublin." Speaking on RTÉ’s *This Week with Justin McCarthy*, he refrained from disclosing further details about the victim, citing efforts to notify his family.
According to sources, Babatunde, an asylum seeker, had been socializing at a concert before the fatal attack. Gardaí responded to an emergency call and found him unresponsive with severe stab wounds. Despite receiving medical attention at the scene and being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The attack took place amid a violent altercation between two groups who had been out earlier at a venue before tensions escalated onto the street. Gardaí are currently analyzing CCTV footage and widely circulated social media videos that allegedly capture the chaos.
A second man involved in the incident sustained non-life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized.
Videos of the altercation, including footage of an individual brandishing a knife, have gone viral. Reacting to the disturbing clips, O’Callaghan confirmed he had seen the footage and assured the public that authorities are making "significant progress" in identifying those responsible.
"The individuals carrying knives and engaging in street violence must understand that *An Garda Síochána* is actively tracking them down," he stated.
The minister also emphasized the need for enhanced law enforcement tools, including facial recognition technology, to aid in investigations.
"Gardaí currently rely on CCTV to track suspects, but facial recognition technology would significantly speed up the process," he added, urging political parties to support its implementation.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, and efforts are ongoing to bring those involved to justice.
