Police operatives in Ondo State have apprehended a 40-year-old ex-convict, Ishaku Abdul, along with six other suspects, over allegations of kidnapping and other criminal offenses.

The arrests were carried out by the Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad (SAKS) following intelligence reports linking the suspects to rising criminal activities in the state.

Parading the suspects in Akure, the state capital, Commissioner of Police Wilfred Afolabi revealed that Abdul had recently been released from a correctional facility but was placed under surveillance after a surge in kidnappings in his area. He was eventually arrested at Aladura Camp, Oke-Oge, Osi—an area notorious for abductions.

According to Afolabi, further intelligence-led operations between February 13 and 15 led to the arrest of six other suspects: Aminu, Abdullahi Abubakar (25), Yusuf Saidu (22), Nafiu Ibrahim (32), Mohammed Anas (20), and Kabiru Mohammed (24). All had been on the police wanted list.

In another breakthrough, police successfully rescued a woman who was kidnapped from her home in Ipele. Working in collaboration with local vigilantes, officers raided the kidnappers' hideout and recovered an AK-49 rifle.

Meanwhile, in connection with recent cult clashes in Owo, police arrested 34-year-old Gbenga Olanrewaju, popularly known as "Fish," who confessed to being a member of the Eiye Confraternity. He had been on the run for his involvement in an attempted kidnapping at a filling station in Uso and other crimes across the state.

Additionally, 25-year-old Temidayo Fadahunsi was nabbed for allegedly running a phone theft syndicate. During his arrest at Ijoka, Akure, police recovered 228 Android phones, 156 phone batteries, and 23 foreign SIM cards. The suspect reportedly failed to provide a credible explanation for the source of the items.

Commissioner Afolabi assured the public that all suspects remain in custody and will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.
