Former National Human Rights Commission Chairman, Chidi Odinkalu, has criticized Nigerian senior military officers and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu following the Canadian government's denial of visas to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and other top military officials.
The delegation, comprising over 70 officers, intended to attend the Invictus Winter Games in Canada. Odinkalu questioned the necessity and appropriateness of such a large contingent from a tropical country participating in winter games, suggesting it was both "foolish and irresponsible."
In response to the visa denial, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu expressed strong disapproval, describing the action as "disrespectful" and stating that Canada "can go to hell."
The Canadian High Commission in Nigeria acknowledged the reports but, citing privacy reasons, declined to comment on specific visa applications.
Odinkalu emphasized that, instead of criticizing Canada, Nigerian officials should reflect on the decision to send such a large delegation to an event unrelated to Nigeria's climatic context. He called for an apology to the Canadian High Commission and suggested an investigation into the matter to prevent future embarrassments.
Similarly, former Senator Shehu Sani, upon learning the purpose of the trip and the size of the delegation, reconsidered his initial stance and implied that the trip was unnecessary.
