Anabela Rungo, mother of Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, Chidimma Adetshina, was arrested in Cape Town on Saturday, February 15, 2025. The South African Department of Home Affairs, with assistance from the South African Police Service, detained Rungo at a private residence. This action follows the revocation of her South African identity documents in September 2024, after they were found to have been fraudulently obtained.
Despite being declared an "undesirable person," Rungo continued to reside in South Africa, allegedly using her Mozambican passport to bypass immigration laws. During her arrest, authorities discovered Adetshina's minor child living with Rungo, prompting intervention from the Department of Social Development and the SAPS Child Protection Unit to ensure the child's welfare.
This situation gained attention during Adetshina's participation in the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant, where questions about her nationality arose. Investigations revealed that Rungo had allegedly committed identity fraud, leading to the withdrawal of Adetshina's South African documentation. Adetshina, born to a Nigerian father and a mother of Mozambican heritage, was an infant at the time of the alleged fraudulent activities and was not implicated in her mother's actions.

Authorities are conducting further investigations into potential misrepresentation and fraudulent conduct by Rungo. After processing by Home Affairs, she will be handed over to the South African Police Service for further legal proceedings.
