A 50-year-old security guard in Kano, Abubakar Muhammad, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for segxwally exploiting his 14-year-old stepdaughter.

Muhammad, a resident of Wailari Quarters in Kumbotso Local Government Area, pleaded guilty to the single count of segxwal exploitation.

Justice S.M. Shu’aibu of the Federal High Court in Kano ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt, sentencing Muhammad to seven years without the option of a fine.

According to the Prosecutor, Mr. Abdullahi Babale, of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Kano State Zonal Command, the crime occurred on January 24, 2025, at Wailari Quarters.

Babale told the court that Muhammad lured his stepdaughter into his wife’s room while she was away in Jigawa State and segxwally exploited her on four separate occasions, giving her N2,000 to support her soya bean cake business.

The prosecution presented the defendant’s confessional statement and the victim’s testimony as evidence.

Babale argued that Muhammad’s actions violated Section 16(1) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015, which is punishable under Section 26(1) of the same Act.

The Defence Counsel, Mr. I. I. Umar, pleaded for leniency on behalf of the convicted man.
