A routine police patrol turned violent on Friday when hoodlums attacked officers recovering suspected stolen materials, leaving an immigration officer wounded in the process.
The incident, which occurred around 12:30 p.m. near the Obasanjo Complex in Minna, involved a surveillance team from the 'A' Division Police Command led by ASP Ibrahim Paiko. Reports indicate that the team had confronted road construction workers suspected of stealing iron rods. However, upon sighting the officers, the workers abandoned the materials and fled.
As the police attempted to secure the items, they were suddenly ambushed by a group of construction workers and hoodlums who pelted them with stones and other objects. In the chaos, the attackers damaged the Dangote Patrol Vehicle used by the police team.
In an attempt to disperse the violent mob, ASP Ibrahim Audu fired a shot, which mistakenly struck Assistant Superintendent of Immigration (ASI) Christian Oladimeji, who was passing by on a motorcycle. The bullet hit Oladimeji in the lap, causing her to fall and sustain further injuries.
She was immediately taken to IBB Specialist Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed she had a fractured waist, though no bullet fragments remained in her body.
Security forces have since detained several suspects for questioning, while authorities have launched disciplinary measures against the officers involved. Meanwhile, residents have been urged to remain calm as law enforcement continues to maintain order in the area.
