The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered large quantities of banned and unregistered drugs concealed inside plumbing material shops at the Bridgehead Drug Market in Onitsha.
The agency made the revelation in a post on its X account, sharing a video of the raid that led to the seizure of two trailer loads of illegal narcotics, including banned tramadol and counterfeit medicines.
“In a startling discovery, NAFDAC uncovered prohibited drugs hidden inside PLUMBING MATERIALS SHOPS at the Onitsha Bridgehead Drug Market,” the agency stated.
The discovery comes amid heightened security measures in Onitsha, where six major markets have remained shut for over two weeks due to an ongoing crackdown on the sale of fake and expired drugs. Security operatives have taken control of the affected markets, locking up shops in a bid to sanitize the pharmaceutical trade.
The closure has led to significant losses for traders in markets such as Onitsha Drug Market, Oduwani (Power Tools and Allied) Market, Surgical Line Market, Plumbing Materials Market, the Ogbogwu Fashion Line Market, and sections of the Bridgehead Provision Market and Timber Dealers Market.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to eliminating counterfeit drugs and ensuring public health safety, as further investigations into the illicit trade continue.
