Corps members across Nigeria have expressed frustration after receiving their February allowance, only to find that the expected increase to ₦77,000 was not implemented, contrary to assurances from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Despite a public commitment from NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, in January that the allowance hike had been approved and would take effect once the 2025 budget was passed, the federal government has continued paying the old stipend of ₦33,000.
Multiple corps members confirmed receiving their February payment on Friday night, but the amount remained unchanged, sparking widespread disappointment amid rising inflation and economic hardship.
Speaking in Katsina State earlier, Brigadier General Ahmed had assured corps members that the increment was a done deal. “The Federal Government has already approved the increment of your allowance. It is no longer news; we have the approval in our hands. What we are waiting for is just the passage of the budget,” he stated.
However, weeks later, no explanation has been given for the delay in implementation, leaving many corps members struggling to meet basic needs.
With the soaring cost of living, corps members say the ₦33,000 stipend is no longer enough to cover food, transportation, and accommodation expenses.
A corps member serving in Oyo State voiced his frustration: “How do they expect us to survive on ₦33,000 when everything is expensive? They promised ₦77,000, yet nothing has changed.”
Another corps member in Kano described the situation as a betrayal of young Nigerians. “We are serving our country, yet we can barely afford decent meals. The government keeps making empty promises while we struggle daily,” she lamented.
As frustration grows, corps members await an official response from the Tinubu-led administration, hoping for clarity on when the promised allowance increase will take effect.
