Rofiat Lawal, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member abducted along the Benin-Ore Expressway on Tuesday, February 25, has regained her freedom after her family reportedly paid a ransom of N1.1 million.
Lawal was kidnapped while traveling from Benin, Edo State, to Ibadan, Oyo State, where she was to resume at her place of primary assignment (PPA). Initially, the abductors demanded N20 million for her release but later reduced it to N5 million following negotiations.
A friend of the victim, identified as Agbakwara, provided an update on Saturday, confirming that a ransom of N1.1 million was eventually paid to secure Lawal’s release.
“In the early hours of Friday, the kidnappers increased the pressure, warning that if we failed to meet their demands, we should not expect her return,” Agbakwara recounted. “Desperate, I reached out to everyone I could—her colleagues, the Muslim association, friends from her hometown, my fans, and her family. Through collective efforts, we managed to raise N1.1 million, which was sent to an account provided by the kidnappers.”
The recipient of the payment, identified as Isaac Ayo, reportedly claimed his sister had also been kidnapped and assured that he would deliver the ransom.
Expressing gratitude to those who contributed and shared the news, Agbakwara thanked everyone who helped bring attention to the case.
Meanwhile, security agencies have yet to comment on whether any arrests have been made regarding the abduction.
