A Nigerian researcher has weighed in on the controversy surrounding a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member who alleged threats after calling out President Bola Tinubu’s government over inflation and economic hardship.
The corps member serving in Lagos took to social media to lament the financial struggles faced by NYSC members, blaming the government for rising costs and inadequate allowances.
However, her post sparked debates, with some supporting her stance while others criticized her approach.

Reacting to the viral post, @Optimistic_Ade cited the NYSC by-laws, which prohibit corps members from engaging in partisan politics or making public criticisms of the government.
Quote
“Baby girl, you are currently a staff of the federal government, and on the basis of that, you can’t openly criticize the government. Read your handbook,”
he stated.

@Optimistic_Ade dismissed the allegations of threats from the NYSC bodies, insisting that the officials were merely “calling her to order.”
Quote
“There is nothing wrong if your supervisor calls you to order after discovering you have done something that contradicts company policy,”
he said.

The debate has since sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some defending the corps member’s right to free speech while others argue that her public outcry violated NYSC rules.

She was not in NYSC uniform, she can criticize the government. Anyone can say what they are not. The fact that she said she is corp member does not prove same.
