In a series of decisive operations targeting smugglers, the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Badagry has seized approximately 13,800 litres of petrol and 71 bags of foreign rice. The seizures, which took place between March 7 and 14, were confirmed by Navy Captain Oyeleye Omotayo, Commanding Officer of FOB Badagry.

Omotayo revealed that the operations were intelligence-driven, focusing on disrupting smuggling activities along the Badagry creeks. Acting on a tip-off, naval personnel launched a targeted raid on Friday, March 14, at around 2:54 a.m., intercepting a group of smugglers transporting goods for illegal export.

“The smugglers initially evaded our water patrols,” Omotayo stated. “However, our land patrol team intercepted them around 3:30 a.m., leading to the recovery of 71 bags of smuggled foreign rice. The suspects abandoned the goods and fled upon sighting our personnel at approximately 4:22 a.m.”

In a separate operation that same day, naval intelligence uncovered a stockpile of petrol near Bollington Beach, a notorious smuggling route within Badagry’s waterways. Upon arrival at the location, security forces discovered 234 jerry cans, each containing 25 litres of petrol, amounting to 5,850 litres. The petrol was reportedly intended for illegal transportation via wooden boats into the neighboring Benin Republic.

Further crackdowns between March 7 and 8 resulted in the seizure of an additional 7,770 litres of petrol from two filling stations and Tongeji Island, a known smuggling hotspot.

Captain Omotayo reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to maintaining law and order across the area, stating that all confiscated items were transported to the base for processing and further legal action.

“We will continue to intensify patrols and surveillance to stamp out smuggling and safeguard Nigeria’s economic interests,” Omotayo pledged.

Authorities are reportedly investigating the identities of the fleeing suspects and tracking their smuggling networks to prevent future illegal activities in the region.
