An unidentified man met a brutal end in the Agirgba community of Vandiekya Local Government Area, Benue State, after being accused of theft.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, March 15, when a group of enraged youths reportedly apprehended the man, accusing him of stealing electric cables and hospital equipment meant for a local clinic.
Eyewitnesses claimed the suspect was caught red-handed alongside an accomplice, who managed to escape on a motorcycle, leaving him behind. The mob descended on the man, eventually setting him ablaze.
According to residents, the stolen items were part of a newly constructed health clinic funded by a community member to provide affordable healthcare to locals. The clinic was intended to ease the burden on residents, who previously had to travel long distances to access medical services.
“The clinic was a lifeline for us — built by one of our own to help the community. It’s painful that someone would try to sabotage it,” a resident said.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the incident, but the situation has sparked debate over rising mob justice in the region.
