Out of the number, 68 were applicants seeking Nigerian citizenship by naturalisation, while 24 wished to become Nigerians as a result of marriage (registration).
The Minister of Interior, Capt. Emmanuel Iheanacho (retd.), who disclosed this in Abuja, explained that a total of 109 applications for Nigerian citizenship were considered by the Advisory Committee for Nigerian Citizenship before the FEC made the approval.
Seventeen applications, out of the 109, were stepped down due to non-compliance with constitutional provision and documentary evidence, while 92 were approved.
The minister said, “The 68 recommended applications for citizenship by naturalisation were duly investigated by the two relevant security agencies, and the state government of their residency and no adverse report was submitted against them.
“The 24 applicants met all the constitutional requirements for the grant of citizenship by registration and were adjudged to be of good conduct by their husbands and other notable Nigerians who served as guarantors.
“After deliberations, Council approved the recommendations of the ACNC for the grant of Nigerian citizenship by naturalisation for 68 applicants, and 24 applications for citizenship by registration, while 17 applications were stepped down.”
