The Nigeria Police Force has called on the Take It Back Movement (TIB) and other associated groups to cancel their planned nationwide protest, which is set for April 7. The protest, spearheaded by TIB and other civil society organizations, aims to raise concerns about the alleged misuse of the Cybercrime Act and the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
Juwon Sanyaolu, National Coordinator of TIB, confirmed that the protest would address these issues and more, but the Nigeria Police Force has expressed opposition to the timing of the demonstration. In a statement issued on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police described the protest as “ill-timed and mischievous.”
The police highlighted that April 7 had already been designated by the Federal Government as National Police Day, a day to honor the dedication and resilience of Nigeria's law enforcement officers. Adejobi also expressed concerns about the potential disruption the protest could cause, as the day is expected to feature a high-profile event with international dignitaries, including foreign Inspectors-General of Police and diplomats.
While reaffirming the police force's commitment to upholding citizens' rights to peaceful assembly, the statement urged TIB and other protest organizers to seek dialogue with the appropriate government institutions to address their grievances, rather than proceeding with the protest.
