Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has shed light on his decision not to support Labour Party’s Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election, describing the former Anambra State governor as lacking the political strength to win.
Speaking during a press conference in Abuja on Friday, Wike dismissed Obi as a "social media candidate" whose perceived popularity online did not translate into real electoral viability.
The former Rivers State governor emphasized that his political decisions are guided by realistic assessments, not social media trends or sentiment. He argued that success in Nigerian politics depends on multiple layers of strategy and not necessarily on a candidate’s personal qualifications.
Wike also reflected on the turbulence that surrounded the 2023 election period, particularly pointing to the naira redesign policy and widespread fuel scarcity, which he said created a difficult atmosphere for any candidate.
Despite the chaos, Wike praised President Bola Tinubu for navigating the challenges and emerging victorious.
Wike concluded by commending Tinubu’s strategic prowess and experience, noting that those qualities set him apart in what he called a highly volatile election season.
