The Ekiti State Police Command has officially debunked reports circulating on social media that Helen Kayode, a graduate of Ekiti State University, had been kidnapped near Iworoko-Ekiti.
In a press statement issued Friday, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abutu Sunday, described the alleged abduction as a “masterminded hoax,” revealing that preliminary investigations show Helen was never in any danger and is currently in Lagos.
According to the police, the case began when a family member alerted authorities, claiming Helen had been abducted along the Iworoko-Ado-Ekiti route and was being held in an uncompleted building surrounded by bushes.
Officers immediately swung into action and tracked down her boyfriend, Oluwanifemi Olusesan, who had reportedly been the last person seen with her on May 1.
“During interrogation, the boyfriend explained that he and Helen spent the night together before she travelled to Lagos in the morning,” the statement read. “He expressed shock upon hearing about the kidnap report and immediately called Helen, who confirmed she was in Lagos and promised to return on Saturday.”
The Command condemned the false information, stating that the motive behind Helen’s actions remains under investigation.
“The Command wishes to categorically state that the said Helen Kayode was never kidnapped. Rather, the report was orchestrated and circulated for reasons yet to be determined,” the statement continued.
Police Commissioner, CP Joseph Eribo, has warned citizens against spreading unverified or misleading information capable of causing public panic. He stressed that such actions will not be tolerated and those found culpable will face legal consequences.
“The Ekiti State Command remains committed to the safety of residents and urges the public to always verify reports before sharing them,” CP Eribo added.
The incident has sparked discussions around the misuse of social media and the consequences of fabricating sensitive criminal claims.
