What was meant to be a celebratory moment for women’s empowerment turned tense on Friday in Port Harcourt as several attendees staged a walkout during the Renewed Hope Initiative programme hosted by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The event, which took place under the banner of a collaborative effort between the Office of the First Lady and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), was aimed at distributing empowerment items to about 500 women from across Rivers State.
Trouble began when Mrs. Theresa Ibas, wife of the Rivers State Administrator, was called upon to deliver a goodwill message. As she approached the podium, a faction of the audience abruptly stood up and exited the venue, causing a brief disruption.
The reason for the walkout remains unclear, though sources close to the organisers hinted at political undercurrents possibly tied to state-level tensions.
Despite the interruption, the programme resumed shortly afterward and continued as planned. Dignitaries and beneficiaries remained seated while empowerment items, believed to include vocational tools and start-up kits, were distributed to selected women.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu, addressing the gathering, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to women’s development, especially in underserved regions.
“We are determined to uplift Nigerian women, particularly those who are breadwinners and change agents in their communities,” the First Lady said.
Observers say the incident underscores the delicate political atmosphere in Rivers State following recent shifts in leadership and public sentiment.
Organisers have not issued an official statement on the walkout, but security personnel ensured the event concluded without further disturbance.
