Troops of the Nigerian Army under the 6 Brigade have successfully thwarted a planned bandit assault in Ussa Local Government Area of Taraba State, killing one suspected bandit during a swift ambush operation.

The mission, conducted under *Operation Lafiyan Jama’a*, was launched late Saturday night after the Army received actionable intelligence on the movement of armed criminals near the Fikyu axis of Ussa.

According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who shared details of the operation via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, the troops set up a strategic ambush near Gafar village around 9:00 p.m. based on reports that bandits were mobilising for an imminent attack.

“At about 9:00 p.m. on May 25, troops sighted armed bandits advancing toward Gafar with clear intent to strike,” Zagazola reported. “The ambush party swiftly engaged, neutralising one suspect while others fled into the bush under the cover of darkness.”

Following the encounter, troops conducted a clearance sweep of the area and recovered an AK-47 rifle and a motorcycle believed to have been stolen from a resident. The seized items have since been secured by military authorities for further investigation.

This latest success adds to a series of intensified military efforts to root out banditry in the troubled North-East and North-Central regions, where rural communities remain under threat from armed groups.

Military sources described the operation as a "preventive strike" that helped save local lives and property, while assuring that patrols will be increased in the area to forestall any retaliatory attacks.
