Former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan has firmly ruled out any return to Aso Rock, pledging instead to throw her full weight behind President Bola Tinubu and his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at an award ceremony hosted by Accolade Dynamics Limited in Abuja on Saturday night, where she was honoured as *Women Icon Leader of the Year*, Jonathan declared her support for the Tinubu administration and endorsed the principle of rotational leadership, calling it vital for the unity and progress of Nigeria.
"There is only one president at a time. I believe in 'turn-by-turn' leadership. When it’s your turn, I will support you. When it’s not, step aside—so the country can move forward," she said.
The former First Lady, known for her unfiltered remarks, praised the President’s daughter and Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, for her efforts in mobilising women, describing her as “one of us” and urging women to rally behind her.
Jonathan revealed that her relationship with Senator Remi Tinubu predates their time in Nigeria’s seat of power. She recalled how the Tinubus stood by her and her husband, former President Goodluck Jonathan, during their 2011 presidential campaign.
“I didn’t just meet Oluremi Tinubu because she became First Lady. We have a history. From when I was a deputy governor’s wife to when I became First Lady, we worked together in groups. Even during my husband’s campaign, she and her husband supported us," Jonathan stated.
She further stressed that her days in Aso Rock were behind her, noting that she now enjoys peace of mind and has no intention of returning to the pressures of political office.
"I’m not going back to the villa. If you call me, I won’t go. I’ve done my part. Let my friend enjoy it now. Let me disturb her the way she disturbed me when I was there," she joked.
Her remarks have sparked widespread reactions, with many viewing her open endorsement of the Tinubu administration as a significant political signal ahead of the next electoral cycle.
