GOSPEL guru Sipho Makhabane shattered a lot of gospel fans’ hearts when he announced his retirement last year. At the age of 45 most people could not understand why Ebenezar had to be his last album. For Makhabane it was a sacrifice that was made for the future of gospel music.
“I know that people are angry about this decision; I have had numerous calls and letters asking why I am doing this. The answer is simple: I want to help other artists to grow. When I get into the studio and have to work on Hlengiwe’s album or Sechaba’s or Rebecca’s, I have to concentrate on composing melodies. After that I have to work on managing strategies and live performances. Most of the songs I do for these musicians are compositions and not traditional or hymn books materials. After this process it gets hard to come up with material for my own album. The most selfish thing we do as musicians is that we are so focused on our own success and are not worried about who is going to carry on our legacy when we are gone. I don’t want to retire with my gift, I want to pass it on to upcoming musicians who will hopefully do the same when their time comes,” he said.
Over the years Makhabane, through his recording company Big Fish Music, has mentored and produced for artists such as Rebecca Malope, Deborah Fraser and Sechaba, and discovered the diamond in the rough that was Hlengiwe Mhlaba. However, success did not come easily, but he worked his way up from humble beginnings. As young boy from Mpumalanga he started off as a sugar cane cutter at 15, built camps at the Kruger National Park and was a technician for Telkom at 21. With his love for music growing each day it was in 1996 that he decided it was time to swim in the deep. read more from http://gospotainment.blogspot.com/
