The transplant is being organised by the Sickle Cell Foundation, Nigeria in collaboration with the National Hospital, Abuja and the Mediterranean Institute of Hematology, Italy.
Project Coordinator, SCFN, Mr. Ebenezer Adeleye, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Lagos that the surgery was for sickle cell patients aged between a few days and 16 years.
He said that Nigeria also hopes to benefit from the transfer of technology and skill in bone marrow transplantation from the partnership with Italy.
Adeleye said that at the end of the four-year project, 50 Nigerian children were expected to have benefited from the free surgery which would cost about $110,000 (or N17m) per child.
"The four-year project will be divided into two. In the first two years, IME will perform 50 free transplants for Nigerian sickle cell patients," he said.
