SNYPER at 17-05-2011 10:38 AM (12 years ago) (m) .IN a move that left Nigerians stunned and wondering if the end time has come or just a case of civilization or globalization or all of the three, sex workers in Lagos held a march in Ikoyi, protesting their stigmatization and asking for the freedom to ply their trade. Sex work or prostitution has been an age long profession always plied in secrecy but recent happenings where they come out in broad daylight singing and dancing has kept tongues wagging and people asking if armed robbers would not come out one day to protest for their right and recognition as professionals too.

Dan_Fulani at 17-05-2011 10:42 AM (12 years ago) (m) I read the complete article in the Guardian newspaper. Everyone should read it to understand why ladies engage in this business. I think there will be less need for this type of work is the economy was better and there were safety nets for less fortunate women (especially single mothers ) in our society. If a woman's husband dies and she does not have marketable skills how will she survive in Naija? If a young, poor but ambitious lady wants a university education what will she do? In some countries there are student loans but here in Nigeria I do not know of any loans for poor students. I refuse to condemn anyone for being a sex worker!
My concern is their safety. Sex workers are usually victims of abusive people who think of them as sub-human. Even the police seldom act to protect sex workers. I think sex workers should be given the same protections as other citizens. The public attitude towards prostitutes and stigma will never go away. Reason is that our society look down on sex workers.
The march is more for acceptance than "rights". The sex workers are saying to the public, "..do not pretend we do not exist, we are your daughters, children, wives, sisters, mothers, and family. Treat us as human...with dignity and respect" I hope they succeed in their quest for recognition and "rights".

It is unfair to equate armed robbers to prostitutes. Prostitutes do not hold guns to people's head and demand their money, armed robbers do. Sex workers ply their trade to willing, consenting adults who agree to patronize them without force or violence. Armed robbers and prostitutes are not on the same level. Armed robbers are predators while prostitutes are often preys, victims of a cruel and unjust (unkind) society.

The issue of prostitution in Naija is surrounded by hypocrisy. Go to all the communities and the major cities in Nigeria, you would find brothels everywhere, and clubs where sex workers ply their trade. There is hardly any community that you would not find a brothel these in Nigeria especially the major cities and men patronize them and still come out to condemn the sex workers. The worst men are the Nigerian police who go on late nights raids whenever they need some cash and they arrest the girls so that they can collect money from them. In many developed countries, prostitution is no longer illegal. It is the hypocritical illegality and stigmatization that will attach to the sex workers that give the police legal right to harass them and extort money from them. Yet, many of our so-called responsible men patronize them in bars, clubs or brothels. What should be done is to accept the reality that these trade won't go away but it can be minimized. what we-should do is re-habilitate the sex workers and protect them from harassment. Manage them so that they can practice safe sex and ensure that those that are willing to live the trade are able to find work and live a normal life.
