However, most of those arrested seem to be agents of some cabals that have made nonsense of the revenue of the state for so long.
The suspects include, Mr. Ephraim Adieri from Ozubulu and two others arrested at Michael Junction Ozubulu allegedly extorting money from motorists.
Others are Mr. Osita Ejikonye from Ezeagu, Enugu State and Mr. Humphrey Ogbuenu from Ezzar, Ebonyi State, who were arrested at Borromeo Junction Onitsha with fake identity cards, while Mr. Onyeka Udogaranya and Vitus Uzoma from Ihiala Local Government Area were arrested at Amorka with fake government revenue receipts.
Speaking when the suspects were paraded, the Deputy Governor, Mr. Emeka Sibeudu called on the people in the state to be vigilant, as many fake revenue collectors were everywhere, extorting money from unsuspecting public and misrepresenting the state government.
Sibeudu, however, lamented that over 90 per cent of the fraudsters were not from Anambra State and advised people in the state to always confirm the validity and authenticity of identity cards presented by those claiming to be government agents before parting with their money. Noting that the suspects would be handed over to the police, the deputy governor assured that the task force would not relent in its efforts to flush out the impostors and miscreants, who went about tarnishing the image of the state government.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the governor on Markets and Motor Parks, Chief Sylvester Nwobu-Alor lamented that the fraudsters were seriously destroying the economy of the state as well as the image and integrity of the government.
He disclosed that various state revenue sources were suffering seriously from the activities of fake revenue collectors who he said exploited the people in various forms, thereby making it difficult for them to pay genuine government taxes and levies.
He therefore urged the people not to pay cash to anybody but rather pay into the various government-designated banks.
Answering questions from newsmen, some of the suspects disclosed that they were agents of some top individuals in the state.
Uzoma said he and his group were recruited by one Mr. Ifechukwu Ekwegbaru, while Ejikonye said his own group was employed by one Mr. Onodugo who he said gave them identity cards to sell government emblems.
On his own part, Adieri, who was arrested at Michael Junction, Ozubulu with his group, revealed that they were working for one Mr. Nwabilike.
