Tragedy: Fake PHCN staffer electrocuted •40 teachers resuscitated, discharged, 1

The lifeless body of a middle aged man, dangling on high tension electricity transmission line of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) caused a stir in Katsina suburb as scores of people thronged the community to behold the tragedy.

The disaster struck around 11.00 am on Monday, as the suspected technician attempted to tamper with the power lines in Yan Doroma Community.
The spokesman of the Katsina State command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Deputy Superintendent Mansur Garba, who confirmed this to Daily Sun in Katsina said the surveillance team of the corps on 24 hour patrol spotted the body dangling on the pole.

According to him, the surveillance team formed as a result of reports of rampant vandalising of PHCN equipment, called the attention of PHCN, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the police to the tragedy in the community located about 15km along Katsina Mani Road.

Mr. Garba disclosed that preliminary investigations showed that the deceased was not a staff of PHCN but an illegal technician, otherwise known as ‘NEPA Two’ who acted as volunteer in event of any electrical problem.
The deceased was dentified by some eyewitnesses in the Batagarawa Local Government Area of the state as Nura, while others simply revealed that he was popularly known as Sani Rafindadi, but the spokesman of the NSCDC said the true identification of the suspect was yet to be established.

According to Mr. Garba, various communities in the state had earlier been warned by the state boss of the corps, Commandant Haruna Ahmed Balarabe, to be vigilant and should identify any person attempting to tamper with PHCN property by way of official document.
“Each benefitting community had been sensitized to ensure that any body tampering with PHCN without due process should be reported to the nearest authority,” he assured.

Meanwhile, no fewer than 40 teachers in Katsina State had been resuscitated and discharged in three different hospitals in Katsina over food poisoning which claimed a life.
The deceased, identified as Hamza Sabo, 42, died at the Police clinic over the weekend after the victims and over 600 other teachers attended a capacity workshop organized by the state Ministry of Education ate suspected contaminated food or picked up deadly microbes in the hall where their lunch were served.

The spokesman of the state Police Command, Abubakar Ibrahim Mohammed, who confirmed this said some of the victims complained of dysentery, dizziness and vomiting among others on Friday on their five day seminar.
Ibrahim Mohammed, who disclosed that the restaurant operator, who supplied the food had been invited by the police said the matter had been referred to the state Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
Daily Sun learnt that about seven of the victims were hospitalized at the police clinic, four were taken to the Katsina General Hospital, while about 28 were rushed to Federal Medical Centre Katsina.
It was, however, reliably gathered that all but three of the victims might have been discharged from the hospitals at the time of this report.
