Women in Ekiti State, yesterday carried out a peaceful protest at the premises of the Ado-Ekiti High Court, against the rape of a five-year-old orphan by an ex-convict, Mr. Gbenga Ojo. The protest comes three days after the accused, 27 year old Ojo, was arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court over a one count rape charge.

The women under the aegis of Ifelere Mothers, were led by women leaders of the Action Congress of Nigeria in the state, Mrs. Ronke Okunsanya and Mrs Beatrice Olaleye.

Addressing newsmen, Mrs. Okunsanya lamented that a lot of under-aged girls were being molested by men, saying something urgent has to be done about the situation.

“Two weeks ago, a 12-year-old girl was impregnated by a security man. A few weeks ago, a 14-year-old girl gave birth, we want our children in school to become lawyers and doctors. We don’t want men to take advantage of these girls,” she said.

At the hearing Monday, when the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty.

Part of the charge sheet read thus, “That you, Ojo Gbenga ‘M’ aged 27, in May, 2011, between the hours of 0700hrs and 2200hrs at No.4 Adebayo Street, Ado-EKiti in Ado-Ekiti Magisterial District, unlawfully had carnal knowledge of a 5year old girl, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 218 of the Criminal Code Cap 30 vol.11 laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 1978 as applicable in Ekiti State.”

Corporal Caleb Leramo appeared for the prosecutor, but there was no legal representation for the accused person.

The Magistrate, Mrs. M.A Aina asked the accused if he wanted a counsel, and he answered in the affirmative. The magistrate then advised him to request for one before the next date of hearing.

She further ordered the remand of the accused, and adjourned the case till June 16. But the accused in an interview with newsmen denied the allegation, challenging his accusers to carry out a DNA test.
