The Dominican Republic on Friday extradited a Nigerian citizen to the U.S. where he is wanted on charges of drug trafficking, anti-narcotics authorities here said.

The Nigerian citizen who was identified as Edwin Chiedu Obiorah was detained late Thursday night and later handed over to the custody of agents of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) who then took him to New York to be formally charged.

The Dominican Republic's National Drugs Control Direction (DNCD) said that Chiedu was arrested after arriving on flight from the Venezuelan capital of Caracas Thursday evening and immediately transferred to the offices of the DNCD where he was kept overnight.

Early Friday he was put on a commercial flight to New York where he will face charges in front of a court in the city's Southern District.

The DNCD said Chiedu, who is wanted on charges for masterminding an import and distribution network of narcotics in the U.S., was traveling with both Nigerian and Venezuelan passports.
