The money is a trade loss , when you buy hoping the price will go up only for the price to plummet sometimes 70% from the cost price, if you sell then the money is lost. The problem the boy has is that some of the trade were done unauthorized by his manager or supervisor, so  such loss to a company when he was not asked to buy such shares and number will be taken as a fraud, but if he had succeeded his manager will take the credit.
