The Amsterdam giants were beaten twice by the Spanish outfit in the 2010-11 edition of the competition, but Kluivert is of the opinion that they have the quality to do better this time around.
"Ajax can cause an upset against Real Madrid. They have some great players who can be decisive, although it will be a very difficult task," Kluivert was quoted as saying by Ona FM.
"It is important that Ajax play their own game and press high up the pitch. Things will be extremely difficult when they decide to sit back and defend deep. Dropping deep is suicide against Madrid."
Kluivert is one of only four Ajax players to have scored against Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu. The Netherlands national team's all-time top scorer netted his side's second goal in their 2-0 win in 1995.
Tuesday's match between the Dutch champions and the Spanish powerhouse kicks off at 20:45 CET.
